Sometimes we need to talk. Or unload. Or work out what needs to change.
Sometimes we need to do this with someone who's NOT family, or a friend or colleague - someone who can listen deeply and confidentially, with fresh ears - with no bias or judgement. Someone who's steady, accepting and unshockable.
My name's Rich Goodson. Deciding to have therapy's a major step. But if you're reading this, then you probably have the courage to make that commitment. If you choose me as your therapist, I promise that I'll build on that courage and help you.
What does counselling with me look like? Well, there's no one-size-fits-all. I will tailor it to YOUR needs, session by session. You may have clear objectives, or none at all. You may know what your 'issue' is. You may not. It's all ok. We can work it out.
I'll certainly want to get to know YOU - not just the thing you want to talk about.
So I may ask you questions. I may nudge you towards explaining past and present feelings. I may ask you to describe particular events. And I may offer suggestions. But more importantly, I will offer you the safe, regular space to explore what's difficult - at the pace that YOU want to explore it.
Working with me is a step towards being at the centre of your own life. A step towards feeling more present. A step towards being the person you need to be.

All counsellors have their training in particular 'schools' of therapy. Mine happens to be based in Buddhist psychology. I'm also a practising Zen Buddhist. This means I believe that, with mindful acceptance and compassion, new perspectives are possible.
I qualified with Tariki Counselling and Psychotherapy Training, tutored by Caroline Brazier (author of 'Buddhist Psychology'), and did my placement with Nottingham Counselling Service. I am a registered member of the BACP (British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists). I work online (on Zoom) or, if you're more local, face-to-face from my home in Derbyshire.
I offer a free, 20- to 30-minute, no-obligation consultation (either on Zoom or on the phone) so that you can see if I might be the therapist for you. Contact me by emailing: [email protected] and we can take it from there.
My work is LGBTQ+ -affirming. That means I deeply respect you, your life and your identity, no matter who you are, no matter what.

Testimonials:
"A huge thank you to Rich for all his help, he has been a brilliant counsellor"
('H', June 2021)
"I can highly recommend Rich. He has been invaluable and such a key part of my re-stabilisation"
('HB', May 2022)
"Rich is a deeply talented and measured counsellor. He has created an online space for me to comfortably receive therapy and I have enjoyed my time spent in conversation with him over the course of a year. Deliberate and empathetic, Rich has challenged me when needed and supported me throughout my counselling by facilitating my own conversations in a judgment-free environment. A professional I would happily see again and whom I would recommend enthusiastically, Rich is simply good at what he does and evidences a keen understanding of the intentions of therapy in the way he approaches his practice."
(Cavan, May 2023)
"This was my first time in therapy and I didn't imagine that I'd meet such an understanding, empathetic and kind therapist. Rich is a brilliant and knowledgeable person who created a safe space for me to enter and unload and figure out my feelings and experiences. He led me through methods and coping techniques which were realistic and relevant to my experiences. They worked, and supported me wonderfully. I still practice and use these every day.
I highly recommend Rich to everyone who is looking for 1-2-1 therapy with a mindful, step-by-step approach at a pace set by you. I now feel content, free and comfortable with the new lens I have on life - I can't thank him enough!"
(Rebecca, August 2023)
Fees
I currently charge £55 for a 50-minute session, if you are in full-time employment. I charge £35 if you work part-time or are on a lower income.
The £35 places are very limited - and if you pay the full £55 then you are helping me to provide therapy to some clients at these lower rates.
